Putting drink-drivers in park

Drink-driving is not just socially unacceptable - it's downright dangerous. PFK Electronics' Autowatch TAB, a tethered alcohol breathalyser based immobiliser, prevents a vehicle from being driven by anyone over the legal alcohol limit.

The device consists of two parts: a tethered breathalyser unit and an immobiliser situated in the vehicle's passenger compartment.

The breathalyser can be configured to lock out or allow multiple re-tests to release the immobiliser, allowing drivers to wait until their blood alcohol level drops and try again.

The blood alcohol content and event (time, date, etc) are stored in the unit or can be relayed instantly via an optional GSM module.

Electronic countermeasures prevent circumvention (for example, using compressed air or "clean" air stored in a balloon).

The system can also be programmed to request random samples while the vehicle is in motion.

Installation is very vehicle and component-specific, so expect to pay anything between R6 000 and R8 000.
